The result of an 1898 cross between Ben Davis and McIntosh. Along with Empire, McIntosh and Spartan, Cortland is one of the four most popular varieties in Quebec. This well-known, much-loved apple stands out for its large, crisp fruit and non-browning flesh. The tree is very hardy and has a drooping habit. It is susceptible to fire blight and powdery mildew.
